Tungsten Alloy NDT Collimator

Non-destructive testing methods utilize electromagnetic radiation, sound, and intrinsic material properties to inspect samples, often employing various forms of microscopy to scrutinize external surfaces. However, certain preparation techniques for metallography, optical microscopy, and electron microscopy typically involve destructive processes, such as surface smoothing through polishing or ensuring electron transparency in sample thickness.

Tungsten alloy instruments are well-suited for radiation protection due to their unique combination of characteristics, including high radiographic density (exceeding that of lead by more than 60%), machinability, excellent corrosion resistance, superior radiation absorption compared to lead, simplified life cycle, and high tensile strength. In non-destructive testing, these instruments serve as effective radiation shields against gamma radiation and X-rays utilized in the examination process.

Within nuclear research facilities, nuclear reactors or cyclotrons are utilized to explore or generate radioactive materials. Tungsten alloy finds application in research endeavors as collimators—devices that direct or concentrate radiation beams—or as containers for containing radioactive isotopes.

Tungsten Alloy Collimator Application

For industrial radiography, where gamma radiation sources like Iridium-192 or Cobalt-60 are utilized, a collimator is a crucial tool for regulating radiation exposure. This control enables the creation of radiographic “negatives”, commonly known as radiographs, which are essential for detecting defects in materials. Typically made from tungsten, the collimator’s effectiveness is measured by its ability to attenuate radiation, often expressed in terms of half-value layers (HVLs). For example, a 0.52-inch thick tungsten collimator with a rating of 4 HVLs will decrease radiation intensity by 88.5% through its thinnest walls. The shape of tungsten alloy collimators allows radiographers to precisely direct radiation towards the film and away from other personnel.
